Jews often had to pray in hidden places either due to Pogroms or, as the Spanish Jews after the Inquisition.
Year ago there was an interesting tour in Jerusalem of all the different peoples living here and the different ways they prayed e.g.
The Yemenite Jews prayed on the roof of the synagogue swaying in the rhythm of camels while praying, the European or Ashkenaz Jew sways forward, the Sephardy or Spanish community prayed in cellars, not hidden but reminders. There were many other sects, it was fascinating. Nowadays I suppose it is simply the Israeli Jew and they don’t want to be identified as a separate entity which is great.
As usual, thanks
