SVIT Ukraine, the Ukrainian branch of Service Civil International (SCI), and Action Reconciliation Service for Peace (ARSP) will perform work-camps in the Jewish cemetery of Chernivtsi (Czernowitz) in summer and autumn 2013. For both work-camps one can still apply. Join the volunteers!

The Jewish cemetery of Chernivtsi is, with 50,000 graves, one of the largest preserved Jewish cemeteries in Europe, damaged in some areas and largely neglected. Volunteers will pull up weeds and undergrowth, clear overgrown paths between the graves and discover forgotten inscriptions on the gravestones.

The work-camp of SVIT Ukraine will take place from August 8 to 28. There is no age limitation for participants and no fee is charged. Several excursions will be organized – to Chernivtsi university (UNESCO world heritage site), former Hasidic residence and cemetery in Sadagora, a guided tour through Jewish Chernivtsi, a visit to the Jewish museum and meetings with local NGOs. Participants will be accommodated in a students dormitory and will cook for themselves. Volunteers register though their national branch of SCI or through a SCI partner organization.

Action Reconciliation Service for Peace (ARSP) expects 13 to 15 volunteers for a summer camp from September 26 to October 8 in Chernivtsi. Participants in the age of 40+ will not only work but also explore the history of the city. Participants will visit the small Jewish community, discover the city and let themselves get caught up in the Chernivtsi adventure.
