I first visited Ioannina in 1980. A few weeks ago, my wife Anna and I returned from our most recent trip there. For various reasons, this city in north-western Greece has been a constant presence in my life. It was long after my first journey that I learnt there had been, and still is, a Jewish Ioannina. Now I cannot get it out of my mind.
Galicia, Kyiv, Greece and some exhibitions. There is still a lot to tell about the past year. The forced break caused by the corona virus gives me the opportunity to do it.
My Cousin Vangelis and I are travelling in Epirus in the north-west of Greece. High up in the Pindos mountains, Ioannina – the regional capital – is located. The trip gave me a unique opportunity to join the Yom Kippur service in the local synagogue and to learn more about one of the most outstanding Jewish communities in Europe.
